The ATMGS Board of Trustees and NE-AIPG’s Executive Committee (ExCom) reviewed the ATMGS Committee’s recommendations and confirmed the 2025-2026 awards in the March 2026 ExCom meeting. We congratulate this year’s award winners and thank all students who took the time and effort to apply. We encourage students that did not receive an award this year who are still eligible in the fall to apply for the 2026-2027 awards.

We are pleased to recognize the selected 2025-2026 ATMGS award recipients listed below.

To qualify for the ATMGS, applicants must be junior or senior undergraduate students pursuing a degree in geological sciences at a college or university within the eight-state NE-AIPG region. Evaluation criteria include financial need, academic performance, career goals, achievements (e.g., awards, projects, publications, senior thesis, etc.), and a faculty recommendation letter, with financial need and academic qualifications weighed the heaviest.

The 2025-2026 applications came from eleven different colleges and universities located within five of the eight states that make-up the NE-AIPG. All applicants demonstrated excellent academic qualifications and real financial needs. Many applicants reported active involvement in research projects, which is so important in the geosciences, but requires additional funding beyond tuition for aspects such as fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and conference participation.

The 2025-2026 ATMGS Committee was comprised of five NE-AIPG Members who reviewed the applications between December 2025 and February 2026. The committee chair consolidated individual committee evaluations into a single composite evaluation for discussion in an ATMGS Committee meeting, resulting in recommended award levels and recipients.

The ATMGS Committee presented recommendations to the ExCom and ATMGS Board of Trustees (BOT) in the March ExCom meeting. After considering the applicant qualifications, the ATMGS Perpetual Trust Fund performance, and the NE-AIPG’s current financial status made final decisions, a vote confirmed the final awards. While decisions were challenging, they followed a long‑standing evaluation process designed to ensure fairness within available funding.

The ATMGS BOT and the NE-AIPG ExCom approved an award pool of $17,000 for the eight selected recipients. The name of each recipient, the college or university they attend, and the award amounts are presented in this announcement and are posted on NE-AIPG’s website. The NE-AIPG notified all applicants of the outcome and will distribute awards by check with a formal letter of recognition. Each applicant that did not receive an award received an email and acknowledgement letter notifying them of the results and thanking them for their interest in our scholarship program. As stated earlier, we encourage students that remain eligible in the fall to apply for the 2026-2027 ATMGS awards.

Sincere thanks are extended to each member of the ATMGS Committee for their time and effort in carefully evaluating each application, as well as the former ATMGS Committee Members and former Committee Chair, Dennis McGrath, for developing the evaluation framework that provides fair and meaningful results to aid in the final decisions. Appreciation is also extended to the faculty and students for their interest and involvement in the scholarship program, and to everyone that has and continues to donate to the ATMGS Perpetual Trust Fund. This ATMGS announcement can stand as a reminder to consider donating to the ATMGS Perpetual Trust Fund, so that we can continue to make impactful awards to students for years to come.

Applicants are expected to complete the Application Form and upload required and/or optional support documents through the SurveyMonkey web portal. The faculty letter of recommendation should submitted by the faculty directly to the ATMGS Committee at [email protected].

BACKGROUND

NE-AIPG established the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship in late 1986 to recognize the dedicated leadership and service that Angelo provided to the NE Section, to AIPG, and to the geological profession until his untimely passing on October 11, 1986, with the first awards given out in 1987.  The scholarship furthers Angelo’s goal of acquainting young geologists with AIPG and AIPG’s value as a professional affiliation.  

ELIGIBILITY

Junior and senior undergraduate students majoring in a geological science at an accredited college or university in any of the eight-states that comprise the NE Section (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, and VT) are eligible to apply for a scholarship. Candidates should be on track to receive at least 30 credit hours, or 45 quarter hours, in geological science courses by the end of their senior year, in accordance with state professional geologist licensing criteria. 

BASIS OF AWARD

Scholarships are awarded based on a review of the application packages submitted.  An application package consists of an application form, a financial need assessment, a transcript and two letters. The first letter is a recommendation from the department chair or a faculty advisor; the second letter is prepared by the student applicant.  The scholarships are awarded primarily on financial need and academic qualifications. Financial need may be documented through several methods specified on the application form.  Other evaluation criteria include educational plans, career goals, research projects, and on- and off-campus activities. 

There is no limit on the number of junior or senior students that may apply from each college; however, NE-AIPG may limit awards to no more than two students from any one college.  Former scholarship applicants may apply in a succeeding year providing they still meet the application requirements; former scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply a second time regardless of eligibility.

Announcements for the scholarship are emailed to all previous faculty sponsors, and the department chair or another department faculty member at each college or university in the eight states of CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI and VT that offer an undergraduate program in the geosciences.
