Qualifications and Basis of Award

1. Senior or junior undergraduate students enrolled in a geoscience program at an accredited college or university located in one of the eight states that comprise the Northeast Section – AIPG.  Those states include Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.  The applicant does NOT have to permanently reside in one of the eight states.


2. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of five evaluation criteria: financial need, academic qualifications, career goals, activities/accomplishments/educational plans, and a faculty letter of recommendation.  Financial need and academic qualifications will be weighed more heavily in the evaluation.  The decisions of Scholarship Committee are final.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. A completed application must be received by Dennis McGrath, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Northeast Section – AIPG no later than December 7, 2017.  A complete application includes:

a. Signed and fully completed application form.

b. Financial Needs Assessment.  The Scholarship Committee anticipates that each applicant will have already paid for all or most of their expenses for the 2017-2018 academic year by the time this application is submitted.  The purpose of this section of the application form is to show the committee in up to five general categories what those expenses were, and show, also in five general categories, the source(s) of income that were used to meet those expenses.  In most cases, it is expected that income should equal (or at least approximately equal) expenses.  If the expenses and income are not equal or approximately equal, a brief explanation should be provided.

c. Letter from the applicant discussing, at a minimum, three specific evaluation criteria (financial need, academic qualifications, and career goals) and any other relevant information.

d. Faculty Letter of Recommendation from someone qualified to judge the applicant’s recent academic performance and character such as Department Chair or academic advisor.

e. Recent copy of an official transcript.

f. Optional: - supplemental financial information (e.g., complete 7-page Student Aid Report, including EFC score) to supplement the Financial Needs Assessment.  Please do not submit income tax returns.

2. Applicants can make arrangements to have faculty recommendation letter and official transcript sent or emailed directly to Dennis McGrath at the address below.

3. All application materials must be postmarked, emailed or submitted online on or before December 7, 2017.
